WHAT INGREDIENTS ARE IN BABY CARE PRODUCTS?

Many of the baby products that we know and love contain skin damaging, cancer-causing ingredients such as parabens, sulphates, fragrance, phthalates and petrochemicals (full details below). PETROCHEMICALS are a derivative of crude oil. They can be seen in skincare as mineral oil and paraffin. Toxic to the body they clog pores with studies revealing it can caused anemia, nerve damage to the spinal cord and brain and kidney degeneration in rodents.

SULPHATES such as sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate are essentially detergents (just as harsh as your dishwashing liquid) – this is what makes baby shampoo and body wash to lather. Whilst mostly from petroleum, they can also be derived from coconut and other vegetable oils. However as these vegetable oils are not organic they are often contaminated with pesticides. They are a key ingredient in engine degreasers, industrial detergents and concrete floor cleaners.

PARABENS a low cost preservative that is abundant in skincare products and seen on labels as Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Iisoparaben and Butylparaben. They are used to extend a product’s shelf life however studies have revealed that they are linked to breast cancer and male reproductive abnormalities.

FRAGRANCE can contain a myriad of chemicals. The ingredients that make up the ‘fragrance’ in baby products do not have to be listed individually. This is often where phthalates can be found.

PHTHALATES are man-made chemical used in the making of plastics and are a key ingredient to ‘fragrance’ to help the aroma last. They are commonly found in baby lotions, insect repellents, body wash and shampoos. Phthalates have been linked to abnormalities with both the female and male reproductive system (low sperm count, testicular cancer) and can cause damage to the liver by overloading it with toxins and can damage baby’s delicate kidneys and lungs.
